Gutenberg, Together

The New WP Editor

Guten-Fear to Guten-Clear

It’s not going to ruin your website or business; you can remain using the classic editor, but it will be risky due to not supported as time goes on.

Everything in the content is a block. Each block can be individually controlled. (e.g. one block blue another block orange)

In the right column, the Doc will have options …

Block Controls:

  • Editor Tool Bar at the top.
  • Order arrows will move blocks up or down
  • Drag Zones will allow placing block elsewhere.

Block menu:

  • Blue block is the one selected and being edited.

In the Top Editor Tool Bar:

  • Block Inserter
  • Undo-ReDo
  • Document info (Wordcount)
  • Show/Hide Sidebar (Visual Editor – Text Editor, etc.)
  • Main Editor menu (3 vertical dots I upper right)

Big New Feature: Reusable Blocks can be used for embedded content or Templates; change it in one and it auto-updates across the other re-usable blocks. The downside to template it doesn’t inherit.

Tips:

  • Use lightning-Quick links (copy URL to the clipboard, highlight text in G-berg and paste! You got your anchor link.
  • Slay with Slash Commands→ use /slash helpers to toggle between blocks—similar to Slack.
  • Paste the Works → Word, Google Docs, etc with no format issues
  • Don’t Rebuild Wheels – or Blocks→ Stop copying same content to multiple pages.

COMMON PAIN POINTS:

  • I NEED TO CLICK A LOT MORE→LEARN AND USE THE KEYBOARD COMMANDS, BLOCK SWITCHER AND REMEMBER Blocks can be converted later on.
  • Prefer buttons always the same place? Choose Fix Toolbar [2 more from slides]

BASICS FOR BEING 5.0 READY:

Try Gutenberg:

Use the search for what you are looking to use in a block (e.g. Paragraph, Heading, H2, H3, image, custom HTML, preformatted, classic, table, shortcodes, archives, latest posts, etc.)

If you search “embeds” it auto pulls up all the social media options.

Another useful one is “columns”. You can then put paragraph in one and image in the other.

Side Bar:

  • Recommend not creating in Gutenberg and then converting to Classic.
  • Bonus: All icons are labeled when you hover—access for screen readers and newbies. ?
  • Many places to add blocs from: top left circle with a plus , keyboard shortcut using “/” (slash)
  • With Divi, you can use Divi for one page and Gutenberg for another.
